Textbooks: What You Need to Know

Allen Community College provides textbooks through physical rentals and electronic textbooks (ebooks). In-person courses typically use physical textbooks, while online courses generally use ebooks through Canvas. Some courses may vary.

In-Person Courses

Students taking in-person courses can pick up their textbooks at the Allen Bookstore in the Student Center. Textbooks are provided at no additional rental cost and must be returned in the same condition by the Monday after finals.

Bring your student ID number or full name when picking up books.

Online Courses

Online-course ebooks are available through Canvas and may use:

  • VitalSource — Access through the VitalSource link in your Canvas course and create an account using your Allen student email.
  • Cengage — Access through the “E-Book” module in Canvas and register using your Allen student email.
  • OER — Access textbook links through the appropriate reading or resource section in Canvas.

If your course requires a physical textbook, the bookstore will notify you by email. Books can be shipped at no charge with a prepaid return label.

For questions about textbooks for a specific course, email bookstore@allencc.edu.

Textbook Fees

There is no separate textbook rental fee. Textbook costs are included in the $15-per-credit-hour Instructional Materials Fee, which covers a variety of course materials.

Returning Textbooks

Return physical rentals to the Allen Bookstore by the Monday after finals. Bring your textbook rental receipt with your name and student ID.

Books may also be returned by mail using the prepaid UPS label provided with your textbooks. If you need a replacement label, contact the bookstore.
